About
Hi! My name is Danielle and I'm an aspiring musician based in New York City. I play flute, piano, and also compose!! Orchestration and arranging are some of my favorite things in the world. I love arranging things that my friends and I could play and I also love studying orchestration!! Check out this arrangement I made that a couple friends and I played virtually. However, this page does not go too in depth about arranging. It actually goes more in depth about orchestration. According to Wikipedia, orchestration is, "the way instruments are used to portray any musical aspect such as melody, harmony or rhythm. ..." Orchestration is all about how you use the instruments you choose to write/arrange for. It talks about timbre, sound, and just general characteristics of each instrument.
The Umbrellas of Cherbourg Arrangement
Previously stated at the top, I made this arrangement a couple months ago when we first started quarantine. Since orchestration and arranging go hand in hand, I thought it would be cool to share. Click below to be directed to the YouTube video!
Listening
A great way to get started on learning to orchestrate is to listen to other composers. Wagner's "Ring Cycle" is 16 hours long. I watched it with my friends in one sitting. When you click the button below, you will be redirected to a little snippit of the Ring Cycle. Wagner was known as one of the greatest orchestrators and composers of opera.
Indiana University's Instrument Studies for Eyes and Ears
When I was studying orchestration at summer camp, my teacher showed us all this site that can help us. It shows us each instrument in great detail and also shows us where the instrument sounds the loudest/quietest. It shows us how fast instruments can articulate and standard orchestral excerpts they play so we can put everything into context. Click below for the website.
